About Me
Hey, I’m Matthew Simonson — a student at Campbell University (Go Camels!) majoring in Political Science with a Pre-Law concentration and a minor in Christian Studies. I currently serve as the Student Governor of North Carolina through the North Carolina Student Legislature (NCSL), the oldest active student-run legislative body in the nation.I grew up in Little River, South Carolina, and eventually moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2016. Little did I know at the time this move was going to open the doors to some incredible leadership opportunities as well as helping shape my heart for public life. I’ve always believed that leadership isn’t about volume or titles — it's about the why, why do you serve? That belief took root in Scouting. I earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2021, and remained involved as a Sea Scout leader through the end of high school. I’ve had the privilege of serving as a national youth officer and sitting on the National Sea Scout Committee, which deepened my understanding of how to lead with humility and purpose. Scouts taught me to lead by serving first, to stand up for the right thing even when it’s uncomfortable, and to trust that quiet strength can make a big impact. My Christian faith is at the center of everything I do. It’s what keeps me grounded when life gets messy, reminds me that every person I meet has inherent dignity, and gives me the courage to take on challenges with both truth and grace. Whether I’m mentoring students, taking notes during lecture, or just enjoying a good dinner with some friends, I try to bring that same heart into every interaction. As Student Governor of North Carolina through NCSL, I’ve focused on revitalizing the organization through a platform called Renew 89, aimed at reconnecting alumni, expanding school delegations, and improving transparency and professionalism across the board. I’ve worked with state leaders, faculty, and students to help young people find their voice — and use it to effect real change.I’m deeply passionate about civic engagement, constitutional law, and making government more accountable. I believe young people have both the power and the responsibility to shape their communities. That means asking questions, listening well, and taking action when something needs fixing — not someday, but now. When I’m not in class or in a meeting for NCSL, you’ll probably find me near a pool — I’ve worked as a lifeguard, Red Cross instructor, and pool manager for years — or spending time with my girlfriend Ellie, She’s smart, grounded, and full of grace, and I thank God every day that I get to walk through life with her. Whether we’re talking politics, faith, or just laughing over something small, she brings light and steadiness into my world. She reminds me why the work I do matters — and who I want to become while doing it.If you’re interested in connecting — whether you’re a student, professor, or a public servant — I’d love to hear from you.
